ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Yesterday, word from Golden Boy Promotions honcho Richard Schaefer was that Mexican star Canelo Alvarez likely would fight Miguel Cotto next, despite the latter’s decisive loss to Las Cruces’ Austin Trout last Saturday — bypassing Trout.

Today, the Alvarez camp is saying Cotto is not an option, and that Alvarez is considering a fight with Trout in May.

Props to Alvarez — if, in fact, Trout-Canelo actually happens.

Perhaps the Alvarez camp took note of the record Showtime ratings pulled down by Cotto-Trout. Cotto obviously was the main draw, but the numbers certainly suggest there’s no shortage of boxing fans who’ll pay to see Austin Trout in a
