A recent snow bounty has prompted Sandia Peak Ski Area to push up its opening date by a week.
Sandia announced today that its 2013-14 season will commence on Friday, Dec. 13.
Originally, the plan was to start up on Dec. 21.
Spokeswoman Debi Owen said the opening-day conditions are the best in a decade. A 24-inch base of manmade and natural snow will mean 95 percent of the mountain is available when the first skiers hit the slopes.
“It’s always nice to get open early and make all the skiers and snowboarders happy,” she said.
The mountain usually opens in mid-December but the last time it was this early in the month — 2011 — Owen said there was a smaller base and only 70 percent of the mountain was available on opening day.
