Eddy Co. sheriff looking at staffing shortage

........................................................................................................................................................................................

CARLSBAD (AP) — Eddy County Sheriff Scott London says his agency is facing potential staffing shortages in the coming year due in part to 20 percent of his staff being eligible for retirement in 2014.

The Carlsbad Current Argus reports that another difficulty in keeping the sheriff’s office properly staffed is the county’s low unemployment rates, thanks to a booming economy fueled by the oil and gas industry.

London is scheduled to discuss the effects of a potential staff shortage during today’s county commission meeting.

The sheriff says his office needs to make preparations so it can fill the expected vacancies.
