ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Horse racing will get under way with another season opening Friday at the Ruidoso Downs Race Track and Casino, with post time set for 11 a.m. this Friday only — after Friday it will be at 1:30 p.m. on Friday-through-Monday race days until Labor Day, when the All American Futurity will be run for the 53rd time, the El Paso Times reported.
R.D. Hubbard, who has owned the track since 1988, was buoyed by last year’s approval by Lincoln County voters of a 3/16ths of a cent business retention gross-receipts tax, which is expected to provide the track with $750,000 a year for five years, the Times said.
Hubbard, who had talked before last year’s vote of possibly moving the track to another city, told the Times: “We didn’t want to move; this is home. Ruidoso is where we want to be. We’re ready to go.”
Among the improvements made to the track for the new season are around $70,000 spent refurbishing the track surface and roughly $100,000 on new carpet, new box seats near the finish line and repainting, the Times said.
Friday’s action will include 21 trials to qualify for next month’s 350-yard Ruidoso Futurity, the paper reported.
Hours at the Billy the Kid Casino are 10 a.m. to midnight Sunday through Thursday and 10 a.m. Friday and Saturday, according to the Times.
