WALKER: Was leading GCU in scoring

Demetrius Walker’s final college basketball game was played in the Pit, after all.

Grand Canyon University head coach Dan Majerle on Friday announced that Walker, a former University of New Mexico guard, and fellow starting guard Jeff Lowrey were dismissed from the Antelopes program for an unspecified violation of team rules. Walker was the team’s leading scorer at 16.9 points per contest.

Asked by the Journal what prompted the dismissal, GCU officials would not comment other than Majerle telling the Arizona Republic it was “very disappointing for everyone involved.”

Messages left with Walker were not returned to the Journal. GCU officials said the future of Walker’s status as a student at the Phoenix-based university had not been determined.

Walker was dismissed from the Lobos last season for what the Journal learned were unspecified team rules violations related to his missing team obligations while injured last February. He transferred to GCU and was immediately eligible after graduating from UNM this summer with degrees in Mass Media Communications and Sociology.

The host Lobos beat GCU on Monday night 80-68. Walker scored seven points with four assists and two steals in his return.

Walker told the Journal on Sunday night before his return to the Pit that he had no hard feelings and loved being a part of building a winning program at UNM.

“Not getting the opportunity to play as much as I wanted (at UNM) makes me so grateful for every minute I get on the floor now this season,” Walker said.

“I never wanted to be the leading scorer or anything like that. I’ve always just wanted to be playing a part in helping my team win. I’m getting that now and cherish every minute of it.”

Walker started his college career at Arizona State before transferring to UNM for his sophomore and junior seasons after sitting out the 20010-11 season per NCAA transfer rules.

GCU has two games before opening Western Athletic Conference play Jan. 2. The Antelopes host New Mexico State on Jan. 4.
