SANDOVAL COUNTY – The same-gender couple from Placitas who sued Sandoval County Clerk Eileen Garbagni for not issuing them a marriage license have now received one.
Garbagni said Friday that Gail Gering and Carolyn VanHousen were among only two same-sex couples who have asked for and received marriage licenses since the state Supreme Court issued its ruling on Dec. 19 saying they should be allowed to marry.
“We were kind of surprised we didn’t have a crowd on Friday (the day after the ruling),” Garbagni said.
Clerks in several other New Mexico counties began issuing licenses to same-sex couples in late August, after a District Court Judge in Bernalillo County had ruled that laws that prevented same-gender couples from getting marriage licenses were unconstitutional. Garbagni said she wouldn’t do so until ordered by a court.
