APD issues warning on phone scam

........................................................................................................................................................................................

The Albuquerque Police Department is cautioning residents not to fall for a telephone scam that’s been circulating over the past two days.

ABQ POLICE 01-02-13Police have received several reports that a man identifying himself as a lieutenant with the “APD Warrants Unit” is calling residents and asking them to pay fines over the phone.

“APD does not have such a unit, nor do we ever collect any forms of payment for citations, fees, etc.,” APD spokeswoman Tasia Martinez wrote in an email to the Journal.

Police personnel never ask for payment over the phone, she said, nor do they ask for personal or financial information.

Anyone who receives one of these calls is asked to contact the department at 242-COPS (2677).
