ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A state district judge in Santa Fe has blocked for another 10 days the planned opening of a horse slaughter plant in Roswell.
Judge Matthew Wilson today extended a temporary restraining order until a day-long hearing on the case is held on Jan. 13.
Attorney General Gary King filed a lawsuit and requested the temporary restraining order to prevent Valley Meat Co. from starting operations. He alleges the slaughterhouse could violate laws related to water quality and food safety.
The slaughterhouse operator says the company is abiding by the law and that the horse meat produced by the plant will be safe.
