Retail Roundup

Shopping and restaurant news from around the Duke City

Steakhouse chain moving into Albuquerque

longhornA new steakhouse chain is coming to town.

The first New Mexico location of LongHorn Steakhouse is under construction near Cottonwood Mall on Albuquerque’s West Side.

The 6,300-square-foot eatery should open in late spring, according to spokeswoman Erica Ettori.

She said the Duke City restaurant represents a natural progression for the Darden Restaurants-owned chain, which in recent years has added sites in Texas, Arizona and Utah.

“New Mexico was the next logical place and this particular site has the kind of strong retail presence and proximity to residential areas we look for,” Ettori said via email.

Founded in Atlanta in 1981, LongHorn now boasts more than 400 restaurants around the country, according to its website.

Darden — which also owns Olive Garden and Red Lobster — bought LongHorn in 2007.
