ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Prairie View A&M defensive coordinator Charles McMillian has been hired as defensive backs coach at the University of New Mexico, according to multiple online sources.
Coaching Search and Football Scoop are both reporting that McMillian has accepted the job at UNM, replacing Jeff Mills, who was fired after two seasons.
Mills also was UNM’s defensive coordinator. Two defensive coaches on head coach Bob Davie’s staff, McMillian and inside linebackers coach Kevin Cosgrove, have experience as coordinators.
Davie has not announced any staff hires.
McMillian, a 19-year college coaching veteran, has worked at Utah State (his alma mater), Navy, TCU, Indiana, Louisville and Texas A&M. He spent one season at Prairie View.
McMillian’s hiring leaves one position unfilled on Davie’s staff. Football Scoop is reporting that Barry Sacks, defensive tackles coach at California last season, is headed for New Mexico.
Sacks, according to Football Scoop, would coach the defensive line. Archie McDaniel, the defensive line coach the past two seasons, would move to outside linebackers.
Coleman Hutzler, the Lobos’ outside linebackers coach the past two years, took a job at Florida.
Before his one season at Cal, Sacks worked for 11 years at Nevada. There, he was on staff with UNM wide receivers coach Scott Baumgartner.
