ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — • IN RESPONSE to a recent Sports Speak Up! letter from Mike, ABQ: Yes it’s true that the Lobos are the center of our athletic interests in Albuquerque just as NM State is in southern NM. Mike’s letter shows that Mike may be as narrow minded as the ones he accuses. Our community and the surrounding ones are full of culturally enriching activities: art; ballet; theatre; etc. etc. but when in comes to sports we’re proud to have UNM to support. The “kiss” was clearly blown out of proportion, but to attack a city over a few fan’s reactions does seem to be a bit “knuckleheaded.”

• ACCORDING TO MANY on last Saturday’s postgame radio show, everyone needs to be thankful that the Lobos defeated San Jose State. As they say, “a win is a win.” Very true except this Lobo team returns 4 starters and was the overwhelming pick to win the conference – and they were 5 points down late in the game to the team that was picked for last place in the MWC? Nobody seems to be able to pinpoint it—-but something just isn’t right with this team’s chemistry. Step up the intensity Lobos, or the only “unfinished business” will be booking a flight home from the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
• WOULD LOVE TO SEE a high school “Championship Saturday” at UNM, but if that can’t happen, higher seed earned home field and should not have to travel. NMAA, I hope your ears are open to these ideas, especially the neutral site final.
• WE DO WANT to thank the Journal for the three great photos and article on Sunday, though. … We just would like to have more coverage of and recognition for the New Mexico players, with the hope of attracting more local fan support to help reverse the attendance decline.
