Sheriff’s office warns of jury scam

........................................................................................................................................................................................

SANDOVAL COUNTY – The Sandoval County Sheriff’s Office has put out an alert warning that some current and past jury members may have been the target of a scam.

The scam involves a telephone call in which the caller tells the juror they are charged with failure to appear for jury duty and are in “contempt of court.”

The caller, who sometimes claims to be a sheriff’s deputy or officer of the court, tells the juror they can settle the charges over the phone if they pay $400 by credit card, and press the juror to give the credit card number and security code of the card.

The 13th Judicial District Court never uses the phone to ask for payment of any fines or fees requiring the use of a credit card. If you have had a similar call, please notify the Sandoval County Sheriff’s office at 867-7526 or the New Mexico Attorney General’s office at 222-9000.
