Shelter kills 2,200 dogs, cats

........................................................................................................................................................................................

CARLSBAD – More than half of the dogs and cats in Carlsbad’s animal shelter had to be euthanized last year.

About 4,300 animals entered the Noah’s Ark Animal Shelter last year including some 2,500 dogs and 1,700 cats. Shelter officials say more than 2,200 of the animals were euthanized, including about 1,100 dogs and an equal number of cats.

Only about 840 animals were adopted and less than 600 were redeemed by owners.

Officials say most of the dogs brought into the shelter are pit bulls, Chihuahuas and blue heelers, and those dogs are the hardest to place. They say overcrowding at the shelter also is a problem.

The city contracted Noah’s Ark to operate Carlsbad’s animal shelter in 2006.
