Copper thieves damage Zia Little League field

........................................................................................................................................................................................

Thieves stole copper wiring this week from an Albuquerque little league baseball field, causing up to $25,000 in damages to lighting fixtures and electrical equipment, the league’s president said.

The thieves cut through a chain-link fence and yanked wire from light poles at the Zia Little League field at 501 Elizabeth SE, said Brian Jones, president of the organization.

Zia Little League last year served about 450 boys and girls ages 4 to 16. City officials have offered to let players practice at other city ball fields until repairs are completed, Jones said. The season is scheduled to start March 1.

Zia operates the park under a long-term lease with the City of Albuquerque, which owns the property.
