The Albuquerque Police Department detective who fatally shot schizophrenic 27-year-old Christopher Torres three times in the back at point blank range has been cleared by the District Attorney’s Office, according to a report released by the office.
Detective Christopher J. Brown and detective Richard Hilger were trying to serve Torres — the son of then Bernalillo County Deputy Manager Renetta Torres — with a warrant in April 2011 when an altercation ensued, and Brown shot Torres, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Hilger was also cleared of charges relating to the shooting by the District Attorney’s Office.
Although the report doesn’t conclude that charges against Brown should be filed, it does say the department should have conducted a more thorough investigation into the incident.
