Eldorado’s Duree has the right long-distance plan

........................................................................................................................................................................................

District tournament week around the metro area got off to an jaw-dropping start.

For that, give credit to Eldorado senior guard Caitlin Duree and her marksmanship.

“It was really spectacular,” Duree said.

Duree buried a 70-foot desperation shot at the buzzer Tuesday night, as the Eagles shocked La Cueva 66-64 in a playoff game to determine District 2-5A’s top seed.

“I hit a shot I probably never would have hit in my life,” Duree said. “I’ve hit a few from half court, but never that far back.”

The Eagles (20-5) trailed 64-63 after Mandy Perea of La Cueva (17-8) made two free throws with 1.7 seconds remaining.

Eldorado had no timeouts. The ball was inbounded to Duree. She had time for a quick dribble and a heave.

At the other end, it banked through.

“I didn’t know if it counted or not, because I didn’t know if I got it off on time,” she said. “It was unreal. Like, oh my God, ‘Did that really just happen?’ ”

CLEVELAND 67, RIO RANCHO 66 (OT): At Rio Rancho, the Storm (8-19), which lost by 10 and 22 points to the Rams (13-14) during district, upset its rival in District 1-5A’s first-round contest.

ATRISCO HERITAGE 53, HIGHLAND 51: At Atrisco, Maylena King had 15 points as the Jaguars (7-18) won a District 5-5A first-round game.

RIO GRANDE 58, WEST MESA 36: At Rio Grande, freshman Daniela Ortega had 26 points for the Ravens (10-15) in a 5-5A first-rounder.
