U.S. Government takes Texas’s side in litigation with New Mexico over Rio Grande water

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Groundwater pumping in southern New Mexico could threaten the delivery of Rio Grande water to Texas, the federal government argued in a motion filed today with the U.S. Supreme Court.

The motion dismisses arguments made by New Mexico in ongoing litigation with Texas over the river, with the U.S. government effectively taking Texas’s side in the case.

I’ve highlighted the meat of the federal filing, in which federal attorneys ask the U.S. Supreme Court to direct to New Mexico to rein in groundwater pumping in the Hatch and Mesilla valleys.

We’ll have more in tomorrow’s newspaper.
