Harrington benefit

........................................................................................................................................................................................

A benefit alumni basketball game, staged at Chicago’s Marshall-Metro High School on Saturday, produced about $10,000 to help former New Mexico State basketball player Shawn Harrington with medical and living expenses.

Harrington, who played for the Aggies in 1995-96, is paralyzed from the waist down after a shooting on a Chicago street on Jan. 30. Harrington was shot twice while shielding his daughter from an unprovoked attack.

Rus Bradburd, a New Mexico State English professor and a former NMSU assistant men’s basketball coach — he recruited Harrington to NMSU — flew to Chicago for the event. Bradburd said some 500 people paid $20 each for admission to the game.

As noted in this Journal story from last week, a fund for Harrington has been established at a Chicago bank.
