Albuquerque’s Handsome Family – creators of “True Detective” theme song – featured in Washington Post

Albuquerque’s own Handsome Family – the Gothic country band behind the spooky-terrific theme song for HBO’s smash “True Detective” – got a big dose of national publicity in today’s Washington Post.

Husband and wife team Brett and Rennne Sparks talked to the newspaper about their winding career path and the reasons why producer T Bone Burnett chose their 2003 song for the show’s opening credits. They duo also explains the basis for their band’s intriguing name.

The Post asked Brett Sparks what it felt like to hear his song played for the first time on national television alongside the “insanely cool imagery” of “True Detective’s” opening credits.

“I pinched my leg until it was literally black and blue,” Brett Sparks said. “It was a highlight of my life. Absolutely awesome.”

The show’s popularity is suddenly boosting the Handsome Family’s already respectable international fan base.
