ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Opening arguments began this morning in the ACLU’s First Amendment lawsuit against the city of Bloomfield over a Ten Commandments monument prominently displayed on the City Hall lawn.

The federal lawsuit was filed on behalf of of two Bloomfield residents who seek removal of the display. It alleges the monument is a government endorsement of religion and violates the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution as well as the New Mexico State Constitution.

The city of Bloomfield is represented by Alliance Defending Freedom, an Arizona-based group that, according to its website, “is a servant ministry building an alliance to keep the door open for the spread of the Gospel by transforming the legal system and advocating for religious liberty.”
