2A Girls: Tularosa, Texico advance to title clash

........................................................................................................................................................................................

No. 2 Tularosa 71, No. 6 Hatch Valley 61 (OT): In the fourth meeting between the teams this season, the Wildcats overcame a 12-point fourth-quarter deficit and hit seven of their eight foul shots in the final two minutes of overtime.
Tularosa (24-4) got 17 points from Aviana Garcia, including seven in overtime, and Shania Gililland had three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to finish with 14 points.
Tularosa coach Joe Estrada credited the comeback to the Wildcats’ relentless defensive pressure, which forced 40 turnovers.
“We doubled them everywhere,” he said. “We trapped everything. It was the kind of game where it really didn’t work in the first half, but it helped us later.”
Alyssa Martinez scored 13 to lead the Bears (20-11), but nine of those came in the first half.
Garcia drove through the lane for a game-tying layup at 58-all with 12 seconds left in regulation, and then Valerie Mendez drew a charge on the Bears’ ensuing possession.
Hatch Valley went up by a point early in the overtime, but the Wildcats closed the extra session on a 13-2 run.
Tulsarosa was able to come back despite star guard Kyanne Kowatch sitting for most of the fourth quarter after fouling out.
This shows that we’re more than one player,” Estrada said. “We’re a true team.”
