Gas leak investigated at state penitentiary

SANTA FE, N.M. — Gas leaking from a meter at the New Mexico State Penitentiary was fixed by the New Mexico Gas Company at around 5 p.m. this afternoon, a Department of Corrections spokeswoman said. The leak occurred inside the Level 2 building and forced the evacuation of 200 plus inmates to a recreation yard and everyone is now back inside.


 

Authorities are investigating a gas leak at the New Mexico State Penitentiary that occurred just after 4 p.m. this afternoon and prompted the evacuation of any unknown number of inmates.

The inmates involved are lower level security inmates and they were moved into the recreation yard, said Department of Corrections spokeswoman Alex Tomlin. A fire department is on the scene, she said.

As many 188 inmates were housed in the area in question but some of them may have been out on work details, Tomlin said.
