The victory completed a three-game road sweep of the Bulldogs for the Lobos (12-7-1, 4-2), who begin a five-game home stand with a 6 p.m. Tuesday contest against Kansas.
The Lobos put Sam Haggerty on second base and Chase Harris on first with two outs in the ninth inning against Fresno State (13-7, 5-4) closer Jake Shull. With Alex Real batting, Shull threw a pitch that got away from catcher Taylor Ward and bounced toward the Lobos’ first-base-side dugout.
Ward couldn’t find the ball as Haggerty raced around third. Shull dashed over, picked it up and threw wildly toward home. The ball skipped away again, thus allowing Harris to score the second run on one pitch that wasn’t put in play.
UNM starter Josh Walker allowed four runs and 10 hits in 62/3 innings, but only two of those runs were earned. He threw 73 strikes in 111 pitches, struck out two and now has not walked a batter in 37 innings over five starts. Victor Sanchez (2-1) earned the win with 21/3 innings of shutout relief.
Harris doubled, walked and scored three runs to lead the Lobos, while Real and Danny Collier each recorded two hits apiece.
Victimized by his own wild pitch, Shull (1-2) took the loss.
