Federal Budget calls for Big Nuclear Weapons Spending Hike

........................................................................................................................................................................................

The Obama administration wants to pump an additional $666 million into New Mexico’s national laboratories’ budgets in 2012, a 20 percent increase over 2010 levels, according to budget documents released early this afternoon.

Overall, the administration’s Fiscal Year 2012 budget proposal calls for a 19 percent increase in spending on the US nuclear weapons program, which funds a big chunk of the work done at Sandia and Los Alamos Labs.

The budget, unveiled today in Washington, D.C., calls for $7.6 billion for the National Nuclear Security Administration’s “Weapons Activities” account, up from $6.4 billion in FY2010. (2010’s the last year we have a real budget because of the Continuing Resolution craziness that resulted from Congress failing to pass a 2011 budget.)

The increases are concentrated in the weapons program, with reductions in energy research and other civilian science at the labs. My colleague Michael Coleman in our Washington DC bureau and I will be following the briefings and further budget document dumps throughout the day.
