ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office investigators say a woman hit by several vehicles on eastbound Interstate 40 just west of Route 66 Casino just after 11 p.m. Thursday might have been in a minor crash that disabled her vehicle.
The victim’s identity had not been confirmed Friday afternoon, according to Sgt. Aaron Williamson, a public information officer for the Sheriff’s Office.
The victim, whose vehicle is believed to have been westbound on I-40, was hit by a Ford SUV and then run over by other vehicles. Williamson said that stretch of interstate is poorly lit and has a 75-mph speed limit. The driver of the SUV showed no signs of impairment and is not facing any charges.
Investigators said the victim may have been under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Her name is being withheld pending confirmation of her identity and notification of next of kin.
Eastbound I-40 was closed for more than an eighth of a mile while the investigation and cleanup were underway, Williamson said.
