Baroque Players in concert

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The Albuquerque Baroque Players welcome back Elizabeth Blumenstock for a concert at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Historic Old San Ysidro Church in Corrales.

The concert, titled “The Journey of the Italian Sonata, Part II,” will feature Blumenstock on Baroque violin.

It will include music by Italian and German composers spanning the early, middle and high Baroque periods.

The early Baroque sonata, usually comprising short, contrasting and contiguous sections rather than distinct movements – is represented in the program by music of composers Giovanni Battista Buonamente, Dietrich Buxtehude and Heinrich Biber, according to ensemble member Mary Bruesch, who plays viola da gamba.

The middle Baroque period is represented in the program by a Tomaso Albinoni trio sonata.

For the high Baroque period, the concert will offer a Georg Philipp Telemann quartet and a J.S. Bach trio sonata, both of which show the influence of Antonio Vivaldi, Bruesch wrote in an email.

The other ensemble members are MaryAnn Shore on Baroque oboe and recorders and Susan Patrick on harpsichord.

Blumenstock was a guest performer with the Albuquerque Baroque Players in 2010. Blumenstock has played with San Francisco’s Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra since 1981 as soloist, concertmaster and leader. She is on the faculty of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
