State AG to investigate police shootings

New Mexico Attorney General Gary King announced this afternoon that his office will investigate Albuquerque’s latest police shootings, including the killing of a homeless man, captured on video.

In a written statement, King, a Democrat who’s running for governor, said his office’s involvement is “unusual” but that it’s important to show the public that he “is as concerned as they are about the situation and I intend to do everything within my jurisdiction to see that a just result is reached in these cases.”

King said his office will cooperate with the U.S. Department of Justice, which is already investigating whether APD has a pattern or practice of violating people’s civil rights through the use of force.

“We believe it is very important for an objective unbiased external assessment to be made in both shootings,” King said.

King’s announcement comes after hundreds gathered in Downtown Albuquerque to protest the shooting of James Boyd, a mentally ill man who appeared to be turning away when officers opened fire.

Albuquerque police shot another man last night, hours after the protest.
