ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A state District Court judge voided challenger Algin Mendez’s candidacy for the District 46 of the New Mexico House of Representatives, in the June 3, Democratic primary in a decision this afternoon that invalidated 100 of the nominating signatures Mendez submitted to be on the ballot.
The challenge against Mendez was filed by Lina Germann, who was identified in court as “on the strategy team” of incumbent Carl Trujillo.
Mendez’s attorney Dave Ring, said he would confer with his client on whether to appeal judge Raymond Z. Ortiz’s decision. The hearing lasted just over 5 hours. Mendez said he was “disappointed” in the judge’s decision.
Mendez is a former amateur cage fighter and Rio Arriba County Deputy Sheriff who was a State Senate plain clothes security guard in the last legislative session until Rep. Debbie Rodella filed a restraining order against Mendez and he resigned. Rodella is the wife of Rio Arriba County Sheriff Tommy Rodella.
