SANTA FE, N.M. — Ron Drake has resigned as head coach of the girls basketball team at Pojoaque Valley High School.

Drake, a 25-year coaching veteran who also had coached in recent years at Española Valley, Santa Fe and St. Michael’s high schools, led the Elkettes for two years. This year’s team finished 15-14 and lost to St. Mike’s in the first round of the state tournament.

Drake couldn’t be reached for comment this afternoon. Matt M. Martinez, athletic director at Pojoaque Valley schools, said Drake may have tired of the two-hour commute from his home in Sandia Park.

Martinez added that expectations for the Elkettes are high, after a couple of state championships a few years ago. “It’s tough over here,” Martinez said.

“I wish him well,” Martinez said of Drake.

Martinez said the coaching vacancy was posted on Friday.
