SANTA FE, N.M. — A giant rodent is loose in Santa Fe.
.Last week, Kia of Santa Fe’s 25-foot-tall, inflatable hamster disappeared.
“It turned up missing on Tuesday,” said Vanessa Harvey of the car dealership on St. Michael’s Drive. “They cut the straps and everything.”
Hamsters are the stars of a series of TV and web commercials for Kia’s Soul model, exercising to a Lady Gaga tune or bringing peace to giant warring robots by getting them to join in a hip-hop dance.
“Kia’s put a lot money nationwide into the hamster marketing, and we’ve definitely been playing off of that,” said Harvey. The stolen blow-up hamster, which cost a couple of thousand dollars, wasn’t inflated when it was taken overnight.
And the thieves didn’t get the pump needed to resurrect the big mascot. “We pull the pump in every night in the event something would happen to it, they wouldn’t be able to mess with it,” Harvey said.
She said the deflated hamster is pretty heavy. “You wouldn’t be able to take it by yourself,” she said.
“There’s a flat, 25-foot hamster running around Santa Fe somewhere,” Harvey added. “We just don’t know where to look.”
