SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — New Mexico Supreme Court Justice Barbara Vigil has been sworn in as chief justice of the state’s highest court.

The five members of the court select a chief justice for a two-year term to preside over the court.

Vigil was sworn in as chief justice last week. She replaced Justice Petra Jimenez Maes, who had been chief justice since 2012 and who remains on the court.

Vigil was elected to the state’s highest court in 2012. She previously had served more than 12 years as a district court judge in the 1st Judicial District of Santa Fe, Los Alamos and Rio Arriba counties.

Vigil is a graduate of the University of New Mexico law school.
