ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Bernalillo Mayor Jack Torres has picked a police chief candidate he plans to recommend for approval by the town council at their meeting on Monday, said town clerk Ida Fierro.
His choice is Thomas Romero, one of 19 candidates who applied for the job. Romero has a 38-year career in various aspects of law enforcement including 17 years with the New Mexico Lottery Authority involved with security and five years as bureau chief with the New Mexico Department of Public Safety Special Investigations Division.
“He’s really a cracker-jack. I think he would really be a great addition,” Torres said.
If approved, Romero will replace former police chief Julian Gonzales who retired at the end of January.
