2:40 p.m. UPDATE: Albuquerque police said this afternoon that former University of New Mexico President F. Chris Garcia’s alleged role in a prostitution ring was to go out and solicit new “talent.”

They said Garcia, 71, was an alleged member of the ring’s “Hunt Club,” in charge of soliciting women for the business.

Police said they don’t believe Garcia’s motive was to make money but rather to provide a safe place for prostitution without risk of¬† arrest.

Garcia has been booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center on a $35,000 cash or surety bond on charges of promoting prostitution, tampering with evidence and conspiracy, MDC records show.

10:40am UPDATE: Former University of New Mexico President F. Chris Garcia has been booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center on a $35,000 cash or surety bond on charges of promoting prostitution, tampering with evidence and conspiracy, MDC records show.

Officials tell the Albuquerque Journal that Garcia’s arrest is connected to the ongoing multistate online prostitution ring that surfaced over the weekend.

Detectives this morning served search warrants at Garcia’s home in the Northeast Heights off Tramway Boulevard and at his UNM Main Campus office.

A 1:30 p.m. news conference is scheduled at APD.

11:40am UPDATE: UNM Spokeswoman Susan McKinsey released the following statement about 20 minutes ago:

“The University learned of the ongoing APD investigation this morning. We are and will continue to fully cooperate¬† with law enforcement. Media reports which state the search warrants were served in connection with the multi-state online prostitution ring are deeply disturbing. It is important for all of us, our entire university family, that we get to the bottom of this as quickly as possible.”

Detectives are serving search warrants at this hour at his residence and campus offices of former University of New Mexico president F. Chris Garcia in connection with the multi-state online prostitution investigation ring that surfaced over the weekend, Police Chief Ray Schultz tells ABQJournal.com.

No other details were immediately available, the chief said, and it is unclear whether Garcia will be arrested.

David C. Flory, a physics professor at Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey, was arrested Sunday and charged with 40 counts of promoting prostitution for allegedly operating the online ring, known as “Southwest Companions.”
