Amnesty Day brings more than 118 tons of trash to Santa Fe landfill

........................................................................................................................................................................................

A promise of amnesty brought twice the usual Saturday volume of trash to the Buckman Road Recycling and Transfer Station (BuRTT) this past weekend.

The Great American Cleanup, sponsored by Keep Santa Fe Beautiful, saw 742 vehicles pass through the transfer station’s gates to drop off trash and household hazardous waste at no charge, according to a city of Santa Fe news release. Usually, about 350 vehicles come by on a Saturday, it said.

Each participant delivered an average of 371 pounds of waste. Overall, the transfer station reported 238 deliveries of household hazardous waste and 200 deliveries of electronic scrap; 431 passenger tires; and 22 tons of green waste for recycling to mulch. Overall, 118 tons of material were added to the landfill from the event.

Green waste and tires also were accepted on Sunday at no charge, bringing 138 drop-offs of some 30 tons of green waste and 437 tires.
