SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — State officials say part of Conchas Lake State Park in eastern New Mexico will remain closed to camping as the parks agency assesses seasonal staffing needs and the lake’s water level.
The Central Recreation Area usually is open from May to mid-September, but State Parks Director Tommy Mutz announced Wednesday it will remain closed until further notice.
Campgrounds and boat ramps in the North Recreation Area are open.
Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department spokesman Jim Winchester said lake levels are being monitored because low water can create dangers from debris and possibly require more maintenance.
He said the parks agency plans to repost summer jobs with better compensation because of difficulty getting applicants in the area.
The lake is about 30 miles west of Tucumcari.
