It might be called ABQ Beer Week, but the event is taking 10 days to celebrate the craft beer scene in Albuquerque.

The festival, which runs from Thursday, May 22 through May 31, is filling each day with numerous events at various Albuquerque breweries, bars and restaurants. As a precursor to the event, three local breweries are giving back to the community through their Pint for a Pint blood drives. They will be held Saturday, May 17 at the new Tractor Brewing Wells Park location; on Tuesday, May 20 at Marble Brewery’s West Side location and on Wednesday, May 21 at Nexus Brewery. The blood donation gets you a pint glass and a gift certificate for a future beer purchase.

Brush up on your beer knowledge during Beer 101 on Thursday, May 22 at Marble Brewery. Whether you know a lot or little about craft beers, this class offers something for everyone. Try out what you learn at a number of tastings of different styles of craft beers at Total Wine & More locations in Uptown and on the West Side during ABQ Beer Week.

There are several new events this year, according to ABQ Beer Week co-founder Marne Gaston. Cask ales will be paired with cupcakes during the new Casks & Cupcakes event on May 29 at Tractor Brewing in Nob Hill. Also, Il Vicino Brewery Canteen is holding a Cask Ale Festival on May 31, featuring 16 different cask beers, according to Gaston. In past years, Marble Brewery has hosted cask ale events. This year it will host Cask Ale Night on May 30 at its Downtown location and its Westside Taproom.

Newcomers to ABQ Beer Week are The Stumbling Steer, which is holding a Drink-it-and-Take-it pint glass promotion on May 26, and a Stone Brewing Co. Beer Dinner on May 28.

Gaston said she and ABQBeergeek.com creator Patrick Cavanaugh came up with the idea for ABQ Beer Week after noticing the craft beer scene growing in Albuquerque.

“We started it four years ago and it has become popular,” Gaston said. “With the craft beer scene growing, we wanted to show what Albuquerque has to offer.”
