Greenwood helps lead Aussies to overtime win

Lobo senior guard Hugh Greenwood on Thursday night in Perth, Australia, helped lead the Boomers to a 97-95 overtime victory over China in the first game of the four-game Sino-Australia Challenge series.

Greenwood, who started the game for Australia, had six points, four rebounds, three assists and a steal — a little bit of everything stat line familiar to many he posted with the University of New Mexico the past three seasons. Greenwood fouled out in the fourth quarter.

The Australia-based professional basketball website The Pick and Roll, which focuses on professional basketball while also following Australian-born players on college teams in the United States such as Greenwood and former Lobo Cameron Bairstow, tweeted the Journal saying Greenwood was the “best playmaker” on the floor for the Boomers on Thursday night (Perth is 14 hours ahead of Albuquerque) before fouling out.

Former Lobo Luc Longley is an assistant coach on the Boomers squad. Ex-Utah Ute Luke Nevill, who had several big games through his college playing career against the Lobos, had 16 points and six rebounds for the Boomers.

Greenwood was one of 12 players who made the Boomers roster for the Sino-Australia Challenge out of a 14-player training camp. Former Australian Institute of Sport roommate and fellow Mountain West Conference player Anthony Drmic (Boise State) did not make the Boomers cut.

Greenwood is hopeful he makes the Fiba World Cup roster later this summer for the Boomers, though that will be much tougher as several players essentially guaranteed spots on that roster have not yet returned from their professional teams out of the country.

The next game in the four-game series is Saturday night in Perth before the teams head to China for two games there.
