Pueblo: More federal aid to save our forest

........................................................................................................................................................................................

Leaders at the Santa Clara Pueblo issued a plea Saturday afternoon for more federal aid to help save sacred lands that are being slowly consumed by the Las Conchas Fire.

Pueblo officials estimate that the fire has already charred 13,000 acres of pueblo land, a loss that leaves them “shocked and saddened.”

The pueblo estimates that it has lost 75 percent of its forest to the Las Conchas Fire, the Oso Complex Fire or the Cerro Grande fires.

Officials said the fire is undoing three years of work aimed at improving the pueblo’s water supply, and they fear that most of the 1.5 million trees planted after the Cerro Grande fires have burned.
