The store — which specializes in minerals, fossils, beads, jewelry components and related items — will move to 20th and Mountain in September, company President Laura Randolph said.
Mama’s Minerals has been a fixture at the Courtyards shopping center at the San Mateo/Lomas intersection since late 1999, but Randolph said the shop outgrew those environs several years ago. At 12,000 square feet, the new site is more than double the current location.
Randolph said the expansion will allow for a dedicated classroom, a large lapidary shop, more room for kids and additional space to run the company’s website sales.
The move also positions Mama’s Minerals closer to museums with which the company often partners.
“I pursued that part of town,” Randolph said.
The new location — 800 20th NW — has recently been home to ACE Leadership High School.
Randolph said the store will continue at its present home, 1100 San Mateo NE, for the next few months and still hold its two big summer events there — the arts and crafts fair (June 21) and kids’ day (July 26).
The Mama’s Minerals move will continue the gradual hollowing of the Courtyards shopping center. Once one of Albuquerque’s signature retail properties, the center has seen several tenants leave in the last few years, including Lorenco’s Salon, Pendleton and Wright’s Indian Art.
