The old Mac’s Steak-In-the-Rough restaurant on San Mateo has landed a new tenant.

Luis’ Chips & Salsa took over the site at 4200 San Mateo NE last month.

The restaurant specializes in Mexican and American food, including rellenos, posole and flautas made fresh daily with owner Luis Contreras’ family recipes. The mix also includes pancakes, nachos, fish tacos and steak fingers.

Chips & Salsa debuted a year ago in a 200-seat space on east Central, but Contreras said it proved too big. On San Mateo, he has room for about 45 customers and has transitioned to a counter-ordering system from his old full-service model.

“We wanted to downsize,” he said. “It’s easier to manage and in a little more high-traffic area.”

Chips & Salsa is open 7 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
