Harvey is heading to Senior Open

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Albuquerque’s Bill Harvey shot 64 to win by four shots at the U.S. Senior Open Qualifier at Albuquerque Country Club on Monday and qualified for the U.S. Senior Open at Oak Tree in Edmond, Okla., July 10-13.

There were 44 in the field competing for just one opening. Las Cruces’ Dan Koesters won a playoff to get the first alternate spot Monday.

Harvey, 53, has also qualified for next week’s 312-player PGA Professional National Championship in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

The top 20 players there get berths in this year’s PGA Championship.

Other players from the Sun Country Section in the field are David Muttitt and Steve Manning of Albuquerque; Anthony Romero of Capitan; and former New Mexico State player and coach Scott Lieberwirth, who is currently the head coach at UTEP.
