We all know the dress code of the Santa Fe Opera covers just about anything you have in your closet — but it turns out you also can appear in costume!
Spotted in the 3rd row center of last Saturday’s performance of “Carmen” were two women all buttoned up in dresses that looked as if they could have come from the 19th century — including one with an impressive bustle (how DID she sit down?) and a small hat sporting a long feather. Don’t look for them in the photo — we didn’t manage to capture the pair on visual media.
Also, overheard during intermission, from a young man talking to his female companion about the language of the opera: “That was French? I thought it was like weird Italian.”
By the way, if you’ve had trouble getting tickets for Bizet’s opera sung, yes, in French, you’ve got another chance. The opera announced today that demand has been so high that another performance of “Carmen” has been added for Monday, Aug. 18.
