A 57-year-old man was shot and killed in or near his home early Wednesday morning in Rio Rancho. RRPD detectives were combing the area for any trace of a suspect.
Police have not revealed the identity of the victim pending next-of-kin notification, and they did not say how many times he was shot or how the suspect might have fled.
Neighbors said they were awakened around 3:45 a.m. on Wednesday to the sound of sirens and the crime scene grew from there.
RRPD Lt. John Ross said detectives are concentrating their efforts on the home on the 700 block of Plata SE and the area around it.
One of the victim’s two roommates called police to report that the man had been shot, according to Ross. The shooting victim died Wednesday afternoon at an Albuquerque hospital, Ross said.
Detectives are tracing the steps the victim made over the last couple of days in an effort to determine who might have shot him, he said.
Ross said this is the latest of about a half dozen homicides in Rio Rancho since late December, which is high for the city.
Ross, who is in charge of the RRPD’s Criminal Investigation Division, said he sees no reason in particular behind the increase in killings, except that the city is growing and so is crime.
Rio Rancho Police have asked anyone with information about the shooting to contact Crime Stoppers at 843-STOP.
