LAS CRUCES – Doña Ana County authorities say a female inmate is expected to recover from injuries she suffered when she jumped from a second-floor railing at the county detention center.

Officials say the 24-year-old inmate was trying to commit suicide Wednesday when she jumped and landed headfirst on the concrete floor below.

County spokesman Jess Williams said Laura Delhierro was hospitalized in stable condition at an El Paso hospital, where she was being treated for injuries that included a broken nose, a broken elbow and multiple cuts.

Williams said Delhierro was arrested July 5 in the stabbing of a younger sister.
