ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Visitors to the town of Bernalillo will now be greeted by brand new “Welcome to Bernalillo” signs that represent the work of the town’s youth.
Town officials held an unveiling ceremony on Wednesday. One sign is on U.S. 550 near the Coronado Cantina restaurant, the other is on Avenida Bernalillo just west of Interstate 25.
The hand carved wooden signs were made by participants in Bernalillo’s Youth Conservation Corps., a job-training program for young people ages 14 to 25 who have barriers to employment such as the lack of a high school diploma.
The signs are supported by adobe pillars which reflect the architectural heritage of Bernalillo.
