A 31-year-old Albuquerque man is in jail after allegedly stabbing a man repeatedly after accusing the man of stealing his gun, according to Albuquerque police.

Police said the alleged victim allowed Jerry Trejo to place his property in his apartment after Trejo got in an argument with the mother of his child. Trejo left on July 17 after staying the night at the man’s home and returned the same day, according to a criminal complaint filed Wednesday in Metropolitan Court.

Trejo said he couldn’t find his gun, and he accused the man of stealing it. The man said he didn’t steal it and had no use for it.

Trejo then returned to the apartment later that evening, police said, and stood in the doorway hold a knife. Police said the man fled back into his apartment, and Trejo followed, prompting the man to grab his own knife from the kitchen.

Trejo then fled from the man, and the man threw his knife to the ground once Trejo was downstairs from him, police said.

The stabbing occurred when the man grabbed Trejo by the arm, and Trejo turned around and stabbed him several times, including once in the back, as the alleged victim tried to fight and run from Trejo, police said.

The man later identified Trejo, whom he had known only as “J” until that point, and Trejo was arrested. He’s being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center on a $50,000 cash or surety bond.
