Hackathon, anyone?

Chris Eyre, head of the film school at the Santa Fe University of Art and Design, said he wants to bring one to the City Different. But when he asked a packed-to-the-gills Jean Cocteau audience last night if anyone had heard of the event, not many hands went up.

A hackathon, he explained, is where experts involved in software development, from computer programmers to graphic designers, get together for an intense period of collaboration — often 48 hours — to see what they come up with. Eyre said he thinks it would be cool to focus on the topic of immigration.

Not sure how that would work. Would they develop an app to help avoid Border Patrol? Hmmm… then again, that could be a big seller.

The bottom line, though, is that young people are hip to high technology, and Santa Fe needs something to attract and keep young people here. This discussion came up during a gathering sponsored by Creative Santa Fe and Santa Fe Forward on how to support and attract young people in this aging city.

By the way, Albuquerque already has had a couple of hackathons. You’re falling behind, Santa Fe!
