Milk producer closes in Roswell

........................................................................................................................................................................................

ROSWELL – The only local milk producer in southeastern New Mexico is going out of business.

KRQE-TV reported that Nature’s Dairy closed on Thursday after nearly 35 years of providing milk to Roswell-area grocery stores and to schools around the state.

Nature’s Dairy co-owner Jeff Sapp said the milk producing and bottling company lost more than 30 percent of its sales in the past year.

Sapp said that grocery stores that used to buy their milk started buying dairy products from bigger retail chains and that Nature’s Dairy couldn’t compete any longer.

Nature’s Dairy workers packaged the final bottles Wednesday, stocked their shelves with the milk they have left and thanked their customers one last time.

About 25 people worked at the bottling company, and the dairy is helping them find other jobs.
