A handful of athletes from the Rio West area competed in North-South All-Star Games this week across the metro area. A recap of some of the highlights:
FOOTBALL: Valley quarterback Bo Coleman had a big night Wednesday for the North, running for a score and throwing a pair of touchdowns in the North’s 26-14 victory at Community Stadium.
Coleman threw a 36-yard TD pass to Valley teammate Russell Montoya in the third quarter that gave the North a 20-7 lead. Coleman scrambled away from pressure, then dumped off to Montoya, who did the rest of the work after being left wide open.
It was much the same when Coleman and Del Norte’s Daryl Wiggins hooked up on a 27-yard score later in the third quarter. Coleman scrambled and found Wiggins wide open in the middle of the field.
Cibola’s Derek Martinez had the other touchdown for the North, on a 17-yard scramble when he came in briefly to take over at QB for Coleman. Martinez also kicked a pair of extra points.
Cleveland’s Damien Speaker recovered a crucial fumble in the fourth quarter that helped seal the victory for the North.
Other area athletes on the North football roster were Andre Li Rosi from Cleveland (who caught several Coleman passes); Cleveland linebacker MacKay Dunlap, who was in on a handful of tackles; Valley receiver/returner Aaron Molina; Valley linemen Seth Mello and Alvaro Sanchez; and St. Pius lineman Emmanuel Chavez.
Rio Rancho’s David Howes was the North head coach this year.
BOYS BASKETBALL: There were four area athletes on the North squad, which lost 118-115 on Thursday night at West Mesa.
Valley’s Adonis Saltes had 16 points and the Vikings’ Joe Anaya 13. Seth Warfield of Volcano Vista scored 17 points, more than anyone on the North except Kirtland Central’s Christian Mackey who had 20.
The Mustangs’ Josh Platero scored six points, and he also had the ball in his hands for the North’s last shot. A 3-pointer from the baseline circled the rim before falling away.
TENNIS: In girls singles, Clare Donahue of Bosque School and Gracie Cummings of St. Pius lost their matches. Donahue and Cummings both competed in girls doubles and mixed doubles, as well.
No area boys competed in the North-South tennis event. The North boys and girls beat the South 14-7.
VOLLEYBALL: Area athletes who were listed as being part of the North Class 4A/5A roster were Samantha Griffo from Cibola, Sellika Martin of Cleveland, Aimee Molina of Rio Rancho and Caitlyn Martinez of St. Pius.
Bosque School’s Alex Corcoran was named to the South Class 2A/3A roster.
