PESARO, Italy – The siren song was not enough to distract the University of New Mexico women’s basketball team Saturday.

Brea Mitchell scored a team-high 16 points and the Lobos improved to 2-0 on their Italian tour with a 70-54 victory over the Adriatic Sea Sirens. Mitchell hit four of UNM’s eight 3-pointers in the game.

“Brea had a really good game,” Lobo coach Yvonne Sanchez said in phone interview from Pesaro. “It wasn’t scoring either, she played really well. The whole team did for the most part.”

Final margin aside, UNM was pushed significantly harder than in its first game in Italy – a 74-37 win over AS Vicenza on Thursday. The Sea Sirens hit the Lobos with a flurry of 3-pointers and grabbed a 29-27 lead late in the first half.

“They were definitely a better opponent,” Sanchez said. “They hit some shots and went to a zone to force us outside. The good news is, we knocked down perimeter shots. Bryce (Owens) and Antiesha (Brown) really got us off to a good start in the second half.”

The Lobos led 36-32 at halftime and gradually built their margin in the second half. Brown finished with 13 points and nine rebounds for UNM, while Khadijah Shumpert added nine points and eight boards.

Sanchez has employed an experienced starting lineup of Owens, Brown, Mitchell, Shumpert and Kianna Keller. She is working all her players into the action, however, including the four incoming freshmen.

“The starters have been great,” Sanchez said. “We’ve had a few combinations that didn’t work, but we’re learning from those. Everyone has really had some good minutes.”

The Lobos will play two games against the Netherlands National Team on Tuesday and Wednesday before concluding their tour.
